Insurance Ontario Canada | Health Care

Health care in Canada is provided through regional publicly funded healthcare systems, collectively called "Medicare", based on the provisions of Canada's Health Act 1984, a global law.

Canadians consider access to publicly funded health services to be self-evident, ensuring that all citizens have access to health care wherever they are in the country.

However, about 30% of Canadian health care is paid to the private sector. This mostly goes towards services that are not covered or partially covered by medical care, such as prescriptions for medication, dental treatment, and sight correction.

Approximately 65-75% of Canadians have some form of supplementary health insurance for the above reasons, many receive it through employers or through the use of secondary social service programs.

Your Health Insurance Card

OHIP stands for Ontario Health Insurance Plan.

The Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) is the province's healthcare system. Most basic and emergency health care services are covered.

You can use the health card to visit healthcare providers such as doctors, hospitals, and clinics that do not require an appointment.

Every time you visit, they will check your health card (OHIP card). Carry your health card with you at all times so that you may obtain medical help when you need it.

You cannot, however, pay for prescription medicines or OHIP dental services.

In general, you can obtain an OHIP card after three months of residence in Ontario. There are a couple of exceptions.

You can apply for a health card once you have proof of residency in Ontario, but you will not receive it for another three months.

Go to one of OHIP's offices to apply for a health card. Inquire with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care about the location of the nearest office.

Benefits and Features Health cards

  • Health cards are issued by the provincial health ministries to individuals attending the program in the province and all receive the same level of care.
  • A variety of plans are not needed because the master plan covers almost all matters of basic care, including maternity (except mental health and home care).
  • Except for Quebec, the cost of infertility is not covered in any province, however, it is now partially covered in some others.
  • In some provinces, special supplementary plans are available for those who wish to have special rooms if they are taken to the hospital.
  • Plastic surgery and some forms of elective surgery are not essential to care and are not generally covered. For example, Canadian health insurance schemes do not cover non-therapeutic circumcision.
  • Health coverage is not affected by loss or change of employment, cannot be rejected because of unpaid insurance premiums, and there are no limits or exceptions to pre-existing conditions for life.
  • The Canadian Health Act provides for health care coverage for doctors and hospitals by the publicly funded system, but each province has reasons to determine what is necessary, where, and how services should be provided.
